Lily woke up with a blazing headache. Her temples were throbbing; her mouth felt like sandpaper and her dry lips were sticking to her teeth and her gums, folding inwards in an awkward way when she called her mother.

“Mum, aspirin. Please.”

“Morning,” Minnie shouted from the bathroom over the noisy hotel hairdryer.

She stuck her head around the corner, fresh faced and with even bigger hair than usual. She was wearing another one of her new dresses Lily had bought her, a pink one this time. She had topped it off with a fake pearl necklace and a pink scarf with roses.

“I'm really sorry Mum, I don't think I can get up right now to come with you. I don't feel so good,” she said as Minnie handed her the aspirin and a large glass of water.

“You mean you have alcohol poisoning,” Minnie said in a motherly tone. "I do worry about you sometimes, you know. Don't drink your heartache away, Lily. It's not the solution to your problems. And what’s that pink tie doing around your head?”

Lily removed the tie from her forehead. “I know, Mum. And I'm so sorry if I've ruined your day. We could go tomorrow?”

Her mother looked at her as if she had just proposed they join the Army together. “Good heavens no, Lily. We've already booked Agus and he’ll be here any minute. I'll go by myself and not to worry, I'll be fine.” She twirled around with her arms spread out to the side showing off her new look. “I'm a traveller now after all.”

“Thanks Mum,” Lily said. “Agus is nice. He’ll take good care of you.”

Half an hour later she heard her mother shout something while she closed the door behind her. After another three hours of sleep, four aspirins, a vitamin C shot and a burger from the hotel kitchen, she felt strong enough to pick up the phone to call River. She had to see her before she left. The restless itch she felt when she hadn’t see her in a while was growing inside her again and it made her feel stressed. Lily wondered if she might experience a panic attack when she was back in the UK, being so physically far from her.

“River speaking.” Her voice sounded distorted on the other end of the landline.

“Hi, it’s Lily,” Lily said softly.

“Oh, hi gorgeous lady. I’ve been thinking about you. A lot.”

Lily looked at the goose bumps that had appeared on her arms. “Me too. I want to see you. I need to see you before I leave…”

River was silent for a moment. “I know. Come to my place tomorrow and tell your mother you’re staying over. I’ll see you at seven. Can you do that?”

The thought of staying over made Lily’s heart jump and River’s authoritative tone sent shivers down her spine. “I can do that,” she said, then hesitated. “My mother is out today. I’m not sure what time she’ll be back but you could come by if you want. Have lunch with me?” She could hear River smiling over the phone and pictured her face.
